Wendy joined the Department of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University in 2007, where her research focuses on identifying science-based conservation solutions for freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and California. Current projects integrate her knowledge of population dynamics, food web ecology, and risk assessment for threatened and endangered species, as well as leverage diverse stakeholder groups in collaboration on issues surrounding renewable energy development. Dr. Palen helped found the Earth to Ocean Research Group at Simon Fraser University, a unique collaborative training environment for researchers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Palen also helped found the Liber Ero Postdoctoral Fellows Program, and currently serves as the program’s Assistant Director.

Mark has been professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, since 1986 – interrupted from 1992-97 while he served as Chair and CEO of the British Columbia Utilities Commission. His PhD is from the Energy Economics and Policy Institute at the University of Grenoble. Internationally, Mark has been involved in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, and the Global Energy Assessment. Mark’s research and applied focus is on the design and application of energy-economy models, especially for assessing the cost and effectiveness of climate policies. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Research Fellow with the CD Howe Institute, and in 2009 was named BC Academic of the Year by the Confederation of University Faculty Associations. In 2006, his book, Sustainable Fossil Fuels, won the Donner Prize for best policy book in Canada.

Ken joined The School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University in 1989 and was Director from 2007-2010. He was the founding Director of the Hakai Network for Coastal People, Ecosystems and Management (2010-2015). The Hakai Network works in partnership with First Nations and others to conduct and apply research about ecosystem-based management and sustainability on the British Columbia Coast. Ken and his students work closely with researchers from other disciplines, as well as representatives of government agencies, First Nations, industries, and other non-governmental groups in applying their research to problems in ecosystem conservation, restoration, and management. Ken is frequently called upon in an advisory capacity by government agencies, First Nations, industries, and ENGO’s. He has served on a number of high-level policy advisory panels, such as the Scientific Panel for Sustainable Forest Practices in Clayoquot Sound.
Maureen Ryan, PhD

Maureen is a Research Associate at Simon Fraser University. She has a PhD in Population Biology from the University of California Davis and was a David H. Smith Postdoctoral Fellow in Conservation Research at the University of Washington. Maureen co-founded and co-leads the Wetlands Adaptation Group, a multi-disciplinary, international group of academic, agency, and NGO researchers developing new scientific resources to improve wetlands conservation in the face of climate change. Her research focuses on the effects of hydrologic change on amphibian population viability, community dynamics, and hybridization; and on developing adaptation strategies to support wetland ecosystems under climate change. She also consults on issues at the interface of science and policy, and is adjunct faculty at Western Washington University’s Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies.
Anne Salomon, PhD

Anne Salomon is an applied marine ecologist and assistant professor at Simon Fraser University’s School of Resource and Environmental Management in British Columbia, Canada. Her research addresses the extent to which humans alter the productivity, biodiversity and resilience of coastal marine ecosystems with the ultimate goal of informing ecosystem approaches to marine conservation. Specifically, Dr. Salomon and her students study the cascading effects of predator depletion and recovery, alternative state dynamics in kelp forest ecosystems, marine reserve design, and the factors that confer resilience to coupled human-ocean systems.

Tom works on issues affecting biodiversity conservation, the sustainable use of natural resources, and responses to global change. His lab group carries out research in forest, grassland and desert ecosystems from northern Mexico to western Canada, with a focus on the Colorado Plateau and the Grand Canyon region. While addressing a broad range of topics in ecology, the group also pursues novel collaborative approaches for informing policy and management with sound science. Tom teaches courses in ecology, conservation biology, and environmental policy, and he directs the Landscape Conservation Initiative, a research center at Northern Arizona University that includes the Lab of Landscape Ecology and Conservation Biology, which he founded in 1996. In the mid-1990’s, Tom directed an international program in tropical conservation biology for the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1992. Before joining the NAU faculty in 1996, Tom served as Special Assistant to the Director of the National Biological Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. He is a Senior Ecologist of the Ecological Society of America and an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow, and he serves on numerous editorial and advisory boards concerned with science, conservation, and sustainability.
